Pillows on Sale

Pillows are now on Sale.  Children co-constructed a class notice and this was sent home last week.  If you would like to buy your child's pillow please see me before this Friday.  All pillows will are on sale for $5 and the students have decided that they money we make will go towards buying games for our classroom.

I am going to work with the students to collectively decide which games they would like to purchase.  If you have any brochures that come through the mailbox advertising games please share these with your child and then send them on to school.  This learning will support the work that we have undertaken in Visual Language and Financial Literacy.

Just to reassure all parents that you have first option to buy your child's pillow.

Homework Reminder

Dear Parents

Just a reminder that your child needs to spend 20-25 minutes each school night on their homework.  This is an outline of what your child needs to do each week night to complete their homework.  Homework is checked on Friday and any uncompleted work will be done in break times on Friday.

It is now Term 3 and some students are still finding it hard to follow this routine .  Next year your child will have more homework than this so please help your child to manage their own learning and move towards being a 'self-directed' learner.

To help them to become more self managing children are given a choice of how to use any free time in class with completing homework being the priority.  During this time students have access to laptops and iPads.  Students are also able to access ICT equipment in the Library during afternoon break times Monday - Thursday.

READING – 10 minutes
·       Monday to Wednesday - read their reader with an adult or older family member for 10 minutes and respond to questions that you ask them about what they have read
·       Thursday – read to library book to a family member or be read to by a family member
·       Friday – read the poem of the week to a family member.

SPELLING – 10 minutes
·        Fill in the diagram above by learning to spell 2-3 words each night (Monday - Thursday).  All words must be learnt before Friday.

MATHS – 10 minutes
·        Learn basic facts using flash cards.  All children now need to be able to recall the basic addition and subtraction facts to 20 instantly by the end of Year 4 to meet the standard.  Students also need to be able to instantly recall the multiplication and division basic facts for the 2, 5, and 10 times tables to meet the Year 4 standard. Your child has a set of basic fact flash cards that match the level that they are working at.
·       \Log onto Study Ladder and complete some of the activities that will support in class learning.

REFLECTION – COMPLETED ONCE A WEEK BY THURSDAY
·       Log onto their own blog and write a sentence, using one of the sentence starters on the board, to reflect on their own learning.  This needs to be a detailed sentence to show that they are thinking deeply about their learning.  Some students choose to include photographs of their learning.  Again, class time is given to complete this activity.

Regards

Sonya Harris

A huge thank you also to Jennifer Bourne who spent a day with us, despite not having children at our school.  And finally, thank you Nana Cheryl for your very generous delivery of cushion stuffing.   The students and I really appreciate the time and support that you have all put into helping bring our cushion ideas alive.   Please feel free to come and view their masterpieces on display in Room 5.

We Need You!!!

Hi Parents

Please hunt out the green form that your child child brought home last week asking for help to create our cushions.  The support received by Room 6 parents who have offered to work in Room 6 has been overwhelming compared to the one parent who has offered to come and support Room students.  We need your help to make this an learning opportunity worthwhile.  If you are able to offer your time please fill this form in and return it to school tomorrow.  Your help is needed urgently!

Students also need to bring to school stuffing to fill their pillows.  We have provided lots of felt material and calico to make these wonderful creations but a pillow doesn't look very flash flat. If you have any old pillows please can you send the stuffing to school for your child to use.

Thanks in anticipation
Sonya Harris

If you have any time this week when you are available to help out please look at the timetable on our wall.  So far we have had one parent offer help this week but we need a lot more support.  You do not have to have expert sewing ability, be able to thread and need and talk to students about their ideas will be much appreciated.  I see the Room 5 focus for being dyeing and painting fabric.

Please let me know if you are able to help by filling in the green form that was sent home last week or by ringing me at school.
